The Keyhole Analogy

Posted by officerincivvies on November 19, 2009

I discovered this on NSMB and originally posted it on Shawn’s blag.

Girls sometimes complain that it is not fair a guy can be called a player for sleeping with seven different girls in a week while if a girl does the same she is considered a slut. Fair enough.

However, to this I must retort: if a single key opens many locks then it is considered a master key. If a single lock is opened up by many keys it is considered a loose or broken lock.

First Weekend of the Uni Racing Season

Posted by officerincivvies on October 12, 2009

This weekend was the first weekend of racing in the fall racing season. Basically for the next six weeks I will have races every weekend. This last weekend was Head of the Fraser Fours in Richmond and the Deep Cove Classic in Deep Cove.

The fraser fours was a race we had been training specifically for for over three months. On the day of we had borrowed a 4+ from St. George’s high school. Since they are high school kids, the boat was made for smaller light high school kids, so our guys who are 6′ 5″ couldn’t get their full leg drive.

Still we managed to get 92.4% of olympic gold medal standard. For that we were quite happy.

The next day I raced in Deep Cove, an image of the course is below:

We started at the bottom, went around Jugg Island and then raced to North of the Yacht club. It was a 5 km race and there were 8 entries in my category, the Open Men’s Single.

As you can see from the results (I am SFU(A)):

I came second in my category. Only 2 seconds behind the guy from Washington. And he is from University of Washington, the top rowing school for guys in the World, and he raced at World Cup last year on the Canadian National team. So I don’t feel too bad about 2nd place behind a rower of that level.

There is also a good gap between me and 3rd place.

Ducks Fans Fail

Apparently the Anaheim Duck fans do not know how to use a cupholder.

Take a look.

And of course this comic made me laugh:

“Heat”

Posted by officerincivvies on September 15, 2009

It is steaming in this tiny cell. The walls drip, t he floors perspires, and another bead of sweat rolls down my tattoos. Even they itch, rebelling against the heat and prison ink.

What to do? Go outside anad hang out in the the elbow-to-elbow, dust-caked, dog-kennel of a yard, listen to another man’s drab lies of thug-life grandeur? Or drip sweat on a typewriter while tapping out my own lies. Make no mistake, it is all a lie-the system, who we are, why we are in here.

What is not a lie, this slow burn of incarceration, eating away a man’s life an hour, a day, a year at time?

… Maybe it wouldn’t matter so much-the sweating walls, the deprivation, the hypocrisy, the spirit-squelching confinement-if I thought there was a reason…

Head of the River

Posted by officerincivvies on September 6, 2009

So I have a 6 km race I am doing next week. I will be doing it in a single. Usually I am not too worried about this, even though it will be my first head race in a single.

Here’s what’s interesting, look at the course map:

That’s a lot of turns, narrow waterways, a bridge and then open water.

After looking at that, I am a bit worried.

End of Semester

Posted by officerincivvies on August 9, 2009

Well it’s the end of semester, and I am in the middle of finals so we can definitely call this a procrastination post. I wrote my CRIM-413 final on Friday which was decently easy. It only had 100 MC questions. I have two finals on Friday, then one more next Monday.

Once finals are over I will review the classes.

For now I am still working on my website project and I have been playing a lot of Pokemon Pearl on my DS. I’ve been wanting to play it for a while for the nostalgia. Usually I just only use my start pokemon and get him up to level 80+ before going after the elite four. This time I have about four pokemon I use all the time which is better, although the pokemon are weaker in terms of level.

And why does the PokeCentre wish to “see you again soon?” I could never figure this out.

As you can see on the right hand side of my blog I have linked my last.fm feeds so you can see the last 10 songs I have listened to and I am currently working on getting my Weekly Top Artists feed to work. That’s last.fm’s fault not mine.

Motivational Poster

Posted by officerincivvies on July 16, 2009

I haven’t posted one of these for a while, but I feel this is a necessary post for the lulz.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people can’t get into classes cause they are full, even upper level CS classes. I am glad my date was so early.

Midterms are Done

Posted by officerincivvies on June 21, 2009

I guess this post is going to be a big collection of thoughts on random subjects, this is a blog after all.

A while back I made a post on some basic gym ettiquete but I think it is time that I come up with a new updated list of gym etiquette, maybe people will start following it.

  1. After you’re done with a machine, reset the weights. It’s just common respect and courtesy to the next user.
  2. Wipe the sweat off the machine when you are done. I don’t not like being covered in a plethora of people’s sweet when I am working out.
  3. Don’t bang weights together, it is annoying to everyone else working out to hear how you don’t have control over your weights, and it damages the dumbells as well.
  4. Don’t grunt and groan as you are working out, I do not want to know what you sound like when you crank one out.
  5. Put your damn weights away when you are done, I should not have to stand around for ten minutes waiting to use weights and then finding out that you are done with them.
  6. Don’t spend more than an hour or so in the gym, I should not be able to do my entire workout if I started after you and am able to finish before you. You are not gaining anything you are just tearing more muscle than you can heal.
  7. Don’t go to the gym everyday and work on the same muscle groups, again you are not giving yourself time to heal, you are only hurting yourself.
  8. Don’t bother trying to lift more than you can, it is unsafe, you are going to hurt yourself, and it is much more beneficial to do less weights but more reps. You need to mix up your hypertrophy with strength conditioning.

I am sure I could give more but those are the main ones that bug me right now.

Friday I had two midterms, CMPT 383 and CMPT 413. Unlike previous years, and I started doing this last semester, I properly studied for both of them and I don’t think I did too bad. All week I had been studying for them so I was well prepared. Last weekend was pretty epique though. On Friday Jesse, his friend Anton and my roommate Robin went to Lighthouse Point in West Van where we did some rock climbing on the side of a cliff on the ocean. It was pretty sweet.

Saturday night I headed downtown where I have never seen such weird shit. It was some random Anime Convention so there were so many people dressed up in the most ridiculous shit. I also met this cool homeless guy who had a sign that said, “I bet you $1 that you will read this sign.” Since I don’t skip out on bets that I lose I gave him a dollar. He told me another line that he uses, “Lend me $20? I will pay you back later.” Sunday morning I went out to the valley where I rode my bike around Barnston Island between Surrey and Pitt Meadows. I also walked across the Golden Ears bridge as it was open for the first day, but only to foot traffic.

Back to CRIM 413, hours before the midterm someone posts on First Class (since it is a distance ed course) asking:

If we have to memorize all these terms and Islamic terminology for the mid-term I’m gonna start my own revolution. Is it necessary to know all this? I can’t even pronounce most of it let alone memorize and rewrite it on paper…

Now this is a fourth year class, and since it is criminology all students have to be declared meaning they have done a number of crim classes. I was completely shocked on how much of an idiot this guy, Michael Lis, was as this is what we have had to do in every criminology class so far. I pointed this out to him and his response:

I’ve taken more crim classes than you so don’t be smug

I really wanted to say that “repeats don’t count” so I chose not to argue back. Yet other people decided that it was completely unacceptable to attack him. I can’t believe people actually agreed with him that we should not have to memorize terms.

Idiots…
