Spring 2009-1

Posted by officerincivvies on September 26, 2008

So I have started to think about future courses I need to do to graduate in-order to finish with a, get ready for it, “Bachelor of Science with a Major in Computing Science and concentrations in Computing Systems and Artificial Intelligence, a Minor in Criminology and Certificates in Liberal Arts and Innovative Leadership.”

Wow what a mouth full, and that was all one sentence, though it it was probably a run-on.

Now basically it comes down to this. What I need to finish are the following: 4 4xx CMPT courses, most likely 471, 401/431/499, 470 and 411/412/413/414/417/418/419. CMPT 354, 383/384, 376, 307. Five more upper level CRIM classes and two more classes for my CLA, most likely ENGL 104 and MATH 380.

So now for this winter I want to go to Whistler, a lot. But because of the whole military thing I need to do five courses to graduate on time. By best option is only doing night courses and Tuesday/Thursday classes for this spring. Unfortunately the only CMPT course I can do is CMPT 411 which is some AI course. I do not necessarily want to do this. I am thinking that I will probably do the following in the spring:

CRIM 300 DE – Criminology Theories
CRIM 402 DE – Biological Explanations of Crimes
CRIM 356 – Forensic Sciences II
ENGL 104 DE – Into to Prose
MATH 380 – History of Math.

That is right, three distance ed courses, and still living in rez!

I think this would be pretty sweet, plus think of all the days I could get up on Whistler. But we will see what happens at course selection time.

This would also leave me with ten more classes to do, 8 CMPT and 2 CRIM. I would only have two semesters to do those, and then a possible summer semester next summer.

Spore is Anti… Evolution???

Posted by officerincivvies on September 22, 2008

I have been excepting to hear from the fanatical Christians arguing that Spore is anti-creationism and is promoting Evolution. However, the first article on the subject I found is from McGill University out in Montreal which says the game is anti-evolutionary and promotes Creationism…

Why can’t people just have fun with games?

Good News for People Who Love Bad News

Posted by officerincivvies on September 20, 2008

…so I mentioned the other day how the coach boat died on me while coaching a learn to row. Well we thought it might have been the gas connection but now it turns out that it decided to break for two other people in their learn to row sessions.

So we have three more weeks of this learn to row but no coach boats… does this seem like something that is not right? What are we paying the boat house for? To use their water? I don’t think they own the Burrard Inlet.

Sarah Palin Is an Idiot

Posted by officerincivvies on September 20, 2008

For those of you who know who Sarah Palin is, you are probably thinking: “not another anti-Palin blog post!” While those of you who do not know who she is, the basic story is that she was a Mayor of a town, of 1000 people, then she became Governor in Alaska for the last two years. Now she has been chosen as John McCain’s Vice President choice. Her ideologies are very similar to that of George W. Bush and of John McCain.

Now before you all start to think this is a post about American politics I must say I care about American politics as much as I care about the politics of Venezula, Somalia, the Virgin Islands or Antartica. Basically, not at all.

Now in the last few days Ms. Palin’s Yahoo eMail, gov.palin@yahoo.com, was “hacked”, or so the media claims. That is right! The media claims that some hackers from 4chan’s /b/ broke through the Recover Password feature. The media now claims that free emails like gMail, Yahoo and Hotmail need to step up their security.

Now before you start panicking and thinking that your email is not safe, do not worry. The only reason her account was “hacked” into was because she is an idiot. And I use the word “hack” loosely, as it wasn’t even social engineering. The reason her account was broken into was because her security questions were ridiculously easy to answer and all the answers were found with a simple google search.

So here we have Sarah Palin, the next possible Vice President of the United States, who may possibly have to stand up to Putin, is failing to have some basic common sense on the internet. Once again people are forgetting that anything you put on the internet, is there for good, and can easily be found. She probably had all this information on Facebook and is now wondering how anyone could have possibly found it all out.

Clearly someone idiotic as this does not deserve to be the VP of anything.

Saint’s Row

Posted by officerincivvies on September 19, 2008

…so this week I started coaching a novice crew of about twelve people in my sport of rowing. I was not necessarily the most enthused about this because I did not really want to bring an eight of new rowers out on the water.

Tuesday was our first practise, it was basically all on the land, showing them the basics, and safety stuff. Now today was the first day we were bringing them out into the Burrard Inlet. I knew it was not going to be good when minutes before I arrived there I found out that I was supposed to use the coach boat that I was told never to use and I was not coached on it.

Fast forward half an hour into practise where we have the crew out in the middle of the inlet. This is when the motor on the coach boat decided not to work any more. So now I have a crew of rowers floating one way and myself floating the other way. I was not impressed. And to make things worse, the $60,000 fragile eight was floating into a giant dock in the middle of the inlet.

Luckily I had my varsity rower friend with me. We had a pair of paddles so we paddled the coach boat to them as fast as we could, then switched out the bow rower with my friend. He told them how to row to get back safely. We then had to paddle the coach boat back in.

So that, plus all the little problems that happened because of the inlet rowing club, I was not too impressed tonight. Yesterday during my friends novice practise, they did not even have a coach boat because the IRC decided that they needed one more.

So our team is having a bit of a headache with that rowing club.

Clan Won!

Posted by officerincivvies on September 14, 2008

That’s right. The SFU Clan football team won a game. I am of course not talking about the one the won against UBC a few weeks ago, but I am talking about the one they won last night against U of Sask.

At this point you are probably in disbelief and saying to your self, “But… SFU doesn’t win football games?” Well we have won two this year, beating the top rated team in the CIS West whom we haven’t beaten in the last six years.

Currently we are tied for first in the CIS West. Maybe we will be that Cinderella story that they make Disney movies out of. You know, the team who hasn’t won a game in three years but then they pull together and make it to the final round of the playoffs but manage to lose at the last second. But it is ok because there will be inspirational music playing and everyone is friends and has learned a less.

Of course if all else fails, they can just use the Flying-V from Might Ducks. I mean it worked for them.

Spore

Posted by officerincivvies on September 13, 2008

I have been playing spore for the last week or so and I only have one thing to say about it: the game must be banned.

As a fundamentalist Christian it is pretty obvious that this games goes against creationism and is teaching our kids that evolution actually happened. It’s called the THEORY of evolution people!!

My future kids will be believing that we all just “evolved” from some lower level of life. If we truly did evolve from monkeys then why don’t you see any half human / half monkeys around?

It is also teaching my future kids the wrong history. He will go around believing that we have been here for 4.5 billion years. Clearly this is not true. Dinosaurs were still here till 4,000 years ago when God got bored with them and exchanged them for the Egyptians.

Now until this game is pulled from the shelves I am going to have to protest EA.
