The Final Countdown

Posted by officerincivvies on May 29, 2008

I am now starting an official countdown to when I apply to be an Astronaut with the CSA.

At the time of posting there is officially 701 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes and 10 seconds until I graduate and then I can apply.

Of course, if I get accepted I will have to figure out how to get out of the military for a while.

Anyone Can Play Guitar

Posted by officerincivvies on May 29, 2008

So while surfing the internet I found some information on the new Guitar Hero which is for the DS and comes out next month.

There looks to be a couple good songs on the playlist but what I am worried about is if it will sound decent.

I came across this page http://kotaku.com/5011292/rip-guitar-hero-2005+2008 which, putting the annoying parts of the commercial, I am definitely interested in picking it up.

It comes out a few days before I am off to St Jean, so I guess I will be rocking out during basic training.

edit: What I have been wondering is, when you are playing multiplayer with people and you do the “attack” to them that causes their screen to be flipped, since they cannot use the stylus on the other screen, how can they strum?

Space Cowboy

Posted by officerincivvies on May 29, 2008

This is pretty neat, the CSA is looking for Astronauts. So if you ever wanted to be one, you can apply online at http://www.space.gc.ca/asc/eng/astronauts/selection.asp.

Astronauts need to get “secret” clearance, but funnily enough I have “Top Secret” clearance with the military.

If I had my B.Sc then I would be able to qualify and I am just at the max height so I cannot get any bigger. Hopefully they will still be hiring after I am done university.

All These Things That I’ve Done

Posted by officerincivvies on May 27, 2008

Well I just finally finished building my last set and seeing what pieces I am missing and putting them all back into plastic bags.

It was a fun project, now I just need to order them all in and place them into the right set.

I managed to order a bunch of sets from eBay. So far four of them have arrived: Rebel Hunter, Skeleton Surprise, Magic Shop and Broadside Brig.

Although I am still waiting for about five or six more lego sets to arrive from the UK I am going to stop ordering more, for now. My wish list keeps growing though, hopefully soon I will have all the sets I wanted as a kid. Once I saved up for rez in the fall, my NY trip and a few other things, then I might order more.

I hope to collect all of the “cool” sets from Pirates, and Castles and what other random sets.

I have definitely resparked my passion for lego.

Also, thanks to Cory for this. Apparently people are mailing in lego figures to CBC in order to bring back jPod. I would never do this, because I have never seen the show and I would not want to just give away a figure.

Hopefully I get the rest of the sets before I go to St. Jean.

Here We Go Again

Posted by officerincivvies on May 25, 2008

Ok East Indian construction workers, learn to clean up properly. I got another nail in my tire, again, because of you. If this happens again, accidents can happen to your constructions sites.

Gross Out

Chicken Bowl

I just came back from a lunch at the local Taco Bell / KFC place. At this “restaurant” they were advertising some new dish, called a Chicken Bowl, and I have never seen something so disgusting. It is a combination of mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, popcorn chicken and cheese. Just looking at it makes me feel sick.

I wonder how many people actually want to eat this?

Just for fun, Patton Oswald doing a stand up bit on this delicacy:

So Small

Posted by officerincivvies on May 22, 2008

My beret I got when I went through the QM last year in IAP was a size seven.

When I ordered my Belgian beret last summer, I ordered a size seven.

Today I decided to form my beret. At first it seemed a little tight but then I remembered my first one was a bit tight at first.

I cut out the liner, undo the fag tags, shave the beret and then sink it into a sink of cold water. Ten minute later I squeeze out the water and stretch it out. I put it on my head and start to form it.

Trench? Check.

Officer’s Wrinkles? Smoothed out.

Flap pulled to the right? Done.

Hole for my Cornflake? Cut.

Overall look of the beret? Perfect.

So what is wrong, I started to wonder. Then I realized it. It is too small and hurts my head. To solve this solution I just ordered a new beret from Logistik Unicorp, sized 7 1/8. In a week I get to do this all over. Hopefully the new one is the right size.

Same Old Boat

Posted by officerincivvies on May 20, 2008

Saturday, my girlfriend, her sister and I went to Victoria for the day. We decided to go for a number of reasons, her sister wanted to do stuff at her place on the island, my girlfriend wanted to go see friends there, I wanted to go eat at the McDonalds with the giant Chandelier but the biggest reason was the ferry was half off.

We got up at 4am and left from Aldergrove at 5 am. We took the first ferry across. The ferry that took us there was the Spirit of British Columbia. This is one of two of the big ferries they have and it is the only one I really like. All in all, I hate the ferry, it is a long ride that is slow and expensive. If I wanted to ride a boat I would have joined the Navy.

On the ferry rides I managed to read the book The Alchemist which is a pretty decent book, but it is short, running at only 160 some pages.

We arrived in Victoria and drove to this restaurant called Shine cafe, which is a very good mom and pop breakfast restaurant. It is located at 1548 Fort St in Victoria. Basically it is this small little cafe which is always full. The wait is definitely worth it. The have the most amazing eggs benny that I have ever eaten.

After we went downtown and walked all over. I picked up a book called Catch-22 which I have heard good things about.

We went into a store that sells Threadless shirts.

We had dinner in the McDonald’s with the giant chandelier and weirdly enough I ran into a guy who graduated at the same time as me from my high school in Kamloops.

At the end of the day we came back to Vancouver on the same ferry again. While waiting to load up the ferry, four police cars were waiting at the bottom of the loading ramp. After letting off the bottom level, they started to let the top level trickle out. After a bunch of bikers came off, one PC went after them but the lights never came on. The other three PCs were still waiting. Finally they directed one car to the side where two cars parked behind him, and were looking around. We had to get on the ferry before anything really exciting happened, but I have never seen that happen before.

Victoria is a fun place to be though, the next time I am going there will probably be for the Head of the Gorge regatta in October.

Summer Skin

Posted by officerincivvies on May 18, 2008

I went up to Blackcomb on Friday for my weekly round of boarding. Originally I was going to be wearing a hoodie underneath my jacket. I would have died if I had done that. By 10 in the morning the temperature, on top of the mountain, felt like it was close to thirty above. People all over the mountain were in tank tops and shorts.

I was wearing snowpants and a jacket and I was dieing. Next week, if it is going to be nearly as warm, I am going to be wearing a lot less.

Even though it was so hot on the mountain there was still a lot of snow. In the morning we ended up mainly staying on Jersey Cream park run and (me) attempting to ride the different features. By lunch the park was full of park rats all dressed like gangstars (ie basketball jerseys to their knees, pink snow pants etc).

After lunch we stayed up on the glacier were I eventually managed to go up the tbar and then down Couloir Extreme.

Because I decided that I was too cool for sun screen I ended up getting a very noticable, slight google burn on my face and neck. Now people know I am a snowboarder.

I also got my new beret, its a Belgian so I no longer have the stupid leather band (which is oh-so great when you are sweaty). I think this one is a bit too tight on me so I am going to order another one and go one size up. I am debating if I want to cut out the liner or not and if I should shave it. I am for sure going to cut off the fag tags. Maybe cutting out the liner will make it feel less tight, but the tightness seems to be on the band.

I also ordered some new lego sets, I picked up my Rebel Hunter and I got Broadside’s Brig. In the next few hours I may have won Majisto’s Magical Workshop, Robber’s Retreat, and Jedi Defense I & Jedi Defense II.

While sitting in traffic on the way home from Whistler (It took me an hour to get from Willingdon to Aldergrove / US Border exits) I was getting pissed at the number of bikers who just weave in and out of traffic so I decided that I want to get my self a class 6 license. Since I have my class five it won’t take long for me to get it. The only minor detail I have to figure out is where I am going to get a bike to learn on and then take my tests on. My father has his class 6 but he uses it for his police bikes so he will be able to teach me.

But now I must go start on my 363 Assignment A write up.
